AYUSH Quality Accreditation Initiatives in Kerala
Kerala has always been at the forefront of promoting traditional healthcare systems, and in recent years, the state has intensified its focus on ensuring high standards within the AYUSH sector. Quality assurance is recognised as a key driver in transforming AYUSH healthcare services, particularly as Kerala continues to expand its role as a global wellness destination. In this direction, the State has prioritised accreditation and hygiene improvement programmes that strengthen institutional practices and boost public confidence in AYUSH healthcare.
One of the major initiatives in this transformation is the promotion of NABH accreditation for AYUSH institutions. The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) sets internationally accepted benchmarks in patient safety, clinical quality, and administrative efficiency. Kerala aims to equip its AYUSH hospitals and wellness centers with NABH accreditation to enhance transparency, standardisation, and reliability of services. Importantly, this accreditation is a mandatory requirement for AYUSH institutions wishing to host international healthcare seekers under government-supported medical tourism schemes. By enabling more institutions to achieve this recognition, Kerala is paving the way for an expanded global outreach in traditional medicine and wellness care.
Complementing the focus on accreditation, the Kayakalp initiative plays a significant role in improving hygiene and cleanliness standards across AYUSH healthcare facilities. This programme encourages sustainable sanitation practices and fosters a culture of continuous quality enhancement through performance-based assessments. The scheme covers District Hospitals, other AYUSH hospitals, and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, ensuring quality improvement at every level of service delivery. External evaluators assess facilities based on well-defined criteria, and top performers are recognised through awards and incentives, motivating institutions to consistently maintain high standards.
Together, NABH accreditation and the Kayakalp programme reflect Kerala’s commitment to strengthening AYUSH healthcare infrastructure through global-quality service delivery and safe, clean healing environments. These initiatives not only contribute to improved patient experiences but also reinforce Kerala’s ambition to emerge as a world leader in traditional and integrative wellness systems.
