Ayurvedic Primary Prevention Protocol for Cardiovascular Diseases

The Department of Roganidana at Government Ayurveda College, Tripunithura, conducted a research project (2019–2021) to evaluate the role of an Ayurvedic preventive protocol in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Funded by the Directorate of Ayurveda Medical Education with ₹4 lakhs, the study was designed as a randomized controlled trial with 100 participants each in trial and control groups.

The control group followed WHO-recommended lifestyle modifications, while the trial group received an additional 49-day Ayurvedic protocol including Vaiswanara Choornam, Gandharvahasthadi Kashayam, Gandharvaerandam, Triphala, and Tila Choornam. Both groups were followed up on the 49th, 90th, and 180th days.

Results showed a significant 22.1% reduction in CVD risk score in the trial group compared to 7.1% in the control group. There was also a notable reduction in systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol levels.

Overall, the study demonstrates that an Ayurvedic preventive protocol, combined with lifestyle modification, offers an effective and holistic approach to reducing cardiovascular risk.
