Ayush Homeopathy Information Management System (AHIMS)
Objectives of the Practice
- To digitise and streamline the healthcare delivery process in Homoeopathy institutions.
- To ensure the timely availability of patient records and clinical data for quality treatment.
- To enhance transparency, monitoring, and evaluation of services across the Homoeopathy department.
- To integrate technology in healthcare administration for improved efficiency and decision-making.
Context
The Department of Homoeopathy in Kerala caters to many patients through its vast network of dispensaries and hospitals. Traditional manual record-keeping methods posed challenges in data retrieval, service monitoring, and effective planning. To overcome these issues, the department adopted the Ayush Homoeopathy Information Management System (AHIMS) – a comprehensive digital platform to manage patient data, stock, HR, Hospital management committee Account, and institutional functioning.
The Practice
AHIMS is an integrated online platform developed under the guidance of the Department of Homoeopathy in collaboration with the State IT Mission and Start Digital Health Mission.
The system covers:
- Patient Registration and OP Management
- Prescription Management and Digital Case Sheets
- Medicine Stock & Inventory Control
- Daily, Monthly, and Custom Reporting
- Institutional Performance Dashboards
- HR Module for Staff Attendance and Deployment
- Each Homoeopathy institution is provided with access credentials
- Staff members are trained to use the system effectively.
- Hospital management committee Account management
- Real-time data entry is ensured at the point of service delivery.
Evidence of Success
- The number of onboarded institutions is 670, achieving 91% coverage
- Over 80 lakh Electronic Medical records(EMR) have been generated
- Milestone -1 integration with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM ) has been successfully completed
- Timely reporting and data-driven decision-making have improved service delivery.
- Enhanced medicine stock management has reduced wastage and stockouts.
- Institution-wise performance tracking has improved administrative oversight.
Problems Encountered and Resources Required
Challenges:
- Initial resistance to digital adoption among some staff.
- Infrastructure limitations in remote areas (e.g., internet connectivity, hardware).
- Requirement of continuous training and technical support.
- Resources Required:
- Laptops/desktops with internet access in each institution.
- Periodic training and refresher programs.
- Dedicated technical support team at state/district level
- Sustainability and Scalability
- AHIMS is sustainable due to its modular and upgradable architecture.
- The system can be scaled to include IP (Inpatient), lab, and specialty modules.
- Can be replicated in other AYUSH departments and across the nation with minimal customization.
Conclusion
AHIMS is a pioneering initiative in integrating ICT in Homoeopathy public health services. It reflects the Government of Kerala’s commitment to digital governance and quality patient care. As a replicable model, AHIMS showcases how traditional medicine systems can effectively harness technology to improve accessibility, efficiency, and accountability.
