International Research Centre Set to Take Ayurveda to the Global Stage in Kannur
The International Research Institute of Ayurveda (IRIA) has become operational in Kannur. The institute was established to position Kerala as a global hub for Ayurveda by combining traditional knowledge with modern scientific research.
Built on a 300-acre campus in Kalyad, Kannur, IRIA is designed as a global centre of excellence with state-of-the-art facilities. The first phase of the project has been completed at a cost of ₹200 crore. The project will be implemented in two phases.
IRIA’s guiding vision is: “Delineating Ayurveda; Redefining Health.”
Key Facilities in Phase One
- A 100-bed, state-of-the-art research hospital focused on developing evidence-based treatment methods.
- A dedicated Manuscript Studies Centre to identify, digitise, and preserve rare palm-leaf manuscripts that are centuries old.
- A medicinal plant nursery and research centre for biodiversity conservation and scientific study of medicinal plants.
In its initial phase, the institute will focus on research and treatment in the areas of ageing and cancer. More than 40 international research institutions have already shown interest in collaborating with IRIA.
To streamline research activities, six specialised departments have been established:
- Ayurvedic Biology & Translational Ayurveda – Scientific study of Ayurvedic principles using genetics and cell biology.
- Medicinal Plants & Natural Products – Research, development, and conservation of medicinal plants.
- Translational Drug Research – Ensuring quality, safety, and development of new medicines.
- Clinical & Public Health Research – Integrating Ayurveda with public health systems through scientific studies.
- Health Heritage, Museums & Manuscripts – Preservation of historical artefacts and manuscripts.
- ICT Services – Technical support for research using data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI).
