Karunya Palliative Care and AYUSH Mobile Medical Unit
Kerala continues to prioritise inclusive and equitable healthcare by strengthening AYUSH services for populations with limited access to medical facilities. As part of this effort, the State has launched two major initiatives — the Karunya Palliative Care programme and the AYUSH Mobile Medical Unit — to ensure that essential care reaches vulnerable communities at their doorstep.
The Karunya Palliative Care programme focuses on providing quality palliative care to individuals who struggle to access healthcare due to illness, disability, or geographical barriers. This initiative ensures that patients with chronic, life-limiting, or debilitating conditions receive medical attention, emotional support, and comfort within the familiar environment of their homes. By bringing compassionate care directly to patients, it helps improve their quality of life and reduces the burden on caregivers.
To further support healthcare delivery in remote and underserved regions, the National AYUSH Mission (NAM) Kerala has established Mobile Medical Units across various districts. These units play a vital role in reaching tribal settlements, coastal communities, and other marginalized groups who often face transportation challenges and limited access to regular health services. The Mobile Medical Units conduct medical camps, schedule regular visits, and organize health awareness programmes focusing on disease prevention and well-being. They contribute to improved health indicators by addressing issues such as anemia and child mortality while also working to enhance immunity and overall community health.
Together, Karunya Palliative Care and AYUSH Mobile Medical Units strengthen Kerala’s commitment to accessible and people-centered healthcare. These initiatives ensure that every individual — regardless of location or circumstance — can benefit from the healing strength of AYUSH services, promoting healthier and more resilient communities across the State.
