Kerala’s ‘Eat Right India’ Journey: Building a Healthier, Safer and Sustainable Food Ecosystem

Kerala has wholeheartedly embraced the Eat Right India movement, rolling out a series of impactful initiatives that promote safe, nutritious, and sustainable food practices while aligning with the state’s rich culinary heritage and diverse dietary habits. These initiatives span multiple sectors, ensuring food safety, hygiene, and nutrition for all sections of society.

1. Clean Street Food Hubs

Kerala has developed a strong network of certified street food vendors who adhere to high hygiene standards. Through the Clean Street Food Hub initiative, vendors are trained to maintain cleanliness, safe food handling, and quality while serving popular local delicacies. These hubs offer consumers the confidence to enjoy street food in a safe and hygienic environment. So far, 17 Clean Street Food Hubs have been established across the state.

2. Clean and Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Markets

Under this initiative, markets are upgraded to meet strict hygiene and safety standards, ensuring that fruits and vegetables are handled, stored, and sold in clean conditions. It also promotes sustainable farming and strengthens the connection between consumers and local farmers, enhancing transparency in the food supply chain. Currently, 23 such markets are functioning in Kerala.

3. Eat Right Place of Worship

This initiative focuses on ensuring hygienic and safe food offerings at religious places during festivals and gatherings. By providing guidelines for preparation, handling, and distribution, it promotes safe practices in serving prasadam and meals. So far, 43 places of worship in Kerala have been certified under this programme.

4. Hygiene Rating for Food Establishments

The Hygiene Rating system enables consumers to make informed choices by providing clear information about the cleanliness and food safety practices of eateries. Establishments are evaluated on parameters such as sanitation, food handling, and staff hygiene. Across Kerala, 1,905 eateries have received hygiene ratings, reinforcing public trust and encouraging higher standards.

5. Eat Right Campus

This initiative transforms educational institutions into hubs of healthy eating by promoting nutritious food choices and food safety. Through workshops, awareness programmes, and improved cafeteria standards, it encourages students and staff to adopt healthier lifestyles. A total of 88 campuses in Kerala have been certified as Eat Right Campuses.

6. Eat Right School

Targeting school children, this programme integrates nutrition education into learning and promotes healthier food options in school canteens. Through activities, competitions, and awareness sessions, it nurtures healthy eating habits from a young age. So far, 49 schools in the state have been certified under this initiative.

7. Save Food, Share Food

Aimed at reducing food wastage and addressing hunger, this initiative encourages individuals and organizations to share surplus food with those in need. Through awareness campaigns and community partnerships, it promotes responsible food consumption and a culture of care and sharing.

8. RUCO – Repurpose Used Cooking Oil

RUCO is a pioneering initiative that focuses on the safe collection and disposal of used cooking oil from food business operators such as hotels, restaurants, and canteens. The collected oil is converted into biodiesel and other useful products, preventing its harmful reuse in cooking. This initiative not only safeguards public health but also supports environmental sustainability and clean energy goals.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Kerala continues to set an example in promoting food safety, nutrition, and sustainability, ensuring a healthier future for its people.
