SNF @ School project: Building safe and healthy food habits in students
The Safe and Nutritious Food @ School (SNF @ School) initiative is a comprehensive awareness and capacity-building programme implemented by the Department of Food Safety, Government of Kerala, with the objective of promoting safe food practices, healthy dietary habits, and nutrition awareness among school children. Supported by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the programme aligns with national priorities of ensuring food safety and fostering a health-conscious generation. By focusing on schools as key platforms for behavioural transformation, the initiative aims to instill lifelong habits of safe and healthy eating among students. The programme primarily benefits school children while also extending its outreach to teachers, parents, and food handlers associated with school environments. It adopts a holistic and preventive approach by integrating food safety education, nutrition awareness, and hygiene promotion. The initiative emphasizes the importance of balanced diets, safe food handling practices, personal hygiene, and the prevention of foodborne diseases, thereby contributing to improved health outcomes among students.
Implementation of the programme is carried out across government, aided and private schools through structured awareness classes by dieticians or nutritionist, demonstrations, training sessions, and educational campaigns. Interactive and activity-based learning methods are employed to enhance understanding and retention among students. Key topics covered include safe food practices, hand hygiene, nutritional requirements, and the risks associated with consumption of unsafe or unhygienic food. These efforts are complemented by the distribution of educational materials such as posters, handbooks, and visual aids, which reinforce key messages and support continuous learning.A significant component of the initiative is the capacity building of teachers and food handlers. Training programmes are organized to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain food safety and hygiene standards within school premises. Teachers play a crucial role in reinforcing safe practices among students, while trained food handlers ensure hygienic preparation, storage, and serving of food, thereby contributing to a safer school food environment.
The programme also promotes the development of a healthy school food ecosystem by encouraging the availability and consumption of nutritious food options while discouraging unhealthy practices. Regular monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are in place to assess the adoption of safe food practices and ensure sustained implementation of programme objectives at the school level. The outputs of the SNF @ School initiative include the number of schools covered, awareness sessions conducted, training programmes organized, and educational materials distributed. These indicators reflect the extent and reach of programme activities. The outcomes are evident in improved knowledge and awareness regarding safe and nutritious food, better hygiene practices, and the gradual adoption of healthy eating habits among students.
A key innovation of the programme lies in its focus on early behavioural change, recognizing that habits formed during childhood have long-term health implications. The initiative stands out for its integrated approach combining education, practical demonstrations, and stakeholder engagement to create a culture of food safety within schools. By promoting safe food handling, personal hygiene, and balanced nutrition through interactive methods, the programme effectively contributes to the prevention of foodborne illnesses and the development of healthy school environments.
In conclusion, the SNF @ School initiative represents a proactive and sustainable approach to improving public health by addressing food safety and nutrition at the school level. Through continuous awareness, capacity building, and community engagement, the programme plays a vital role in nurturing informed, responsible, and health-conscious individuals, thereby contributing to the long-term well-being of society.
