Special Neuro OP: Panchakarma Initiative for Neurological Disorders
The Panchakarma Department (Neuro OP) at Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, has established a Special Neuro OP to manage neurological disorders through Ayurvedic principles. These conditions, classified under Vatavyadhi, are mainly caused by the imbalance of Vata Dosha, affecting the nervous system and leading to symptoms such as pain, stiffness, tremors, and motor dysfunction.
Ayurveda considers neurological diseases as systemic imbalances involving Dosha, Dhatu, Agni, and Srotas. Key factors include Vata Prakopa, tissue degeneration (Dhatukshaya), obstruction of channels (Margavarodha), and impaired digestion (Agnimandya), which guide the treatment approach.
The OP provides a multidimensional treatment model including Panchakarma therapies like Snehana, Swedana, Basti, Nasya, and procedures such as Shirodhara, along with internal medications for Vata pacification and neuro-rejuvenation. It offers specialized care for conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s disease, neuralgia, radiculopathy, and neuropathy.
Functioning on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at OP No. 1, the OP started on 9 January 2026 and has conducted 17 sessions, treating 51 patients. Various classical Ayurvedic medicines are prescribed based on individual needs.
Supported by a plan fund of ₹6 lakhs, the initiative also promotes research, including studies on therapies for conditions like diabetic neuropathy. Overall, the Special Neuro OP provides a holistic, patient-centered approach integrating treatment, research, and traditional Ayurvedic care.
