Sumana Special OP: An Ayurvedic Initiative for Mental Health Care

The Sumana Special OP at Government Ayurveda College, Tripunithura for psychiatric patients was initiated on 25 September 2019 with government support to address the growing burden of mental health disorders. Functioning every Wednesday, the OP provides care for a wide range of psychiatric conditions including depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), bipolar mood disorders, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance-related disorders, dementia, sleep disorders, and seizure disorders. The clinic is managed by Dr. Shylamma T.M., Professor and Head of the Department of Kayachikitsa, with the support of postgraduate diploma scholars in Manasika Swasthya Vigyan.

As of 6 March 2026, a total of 2,763 patients have availed services from the OPD. Among them, 40% were diagnosed with GAD, 25% with depression, 10% with sleep disorders, 5% with alcohol-related disorders, and the remaining 20% with conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and stress-related disorders. These figures highlight the increasing prevalence of mental health issues in the community.

The Sumana OP stands out for its focused and accessible mental healthcare services delivered through Ayurvedic principles. With rising levels of chronic stress and lifestyle-related challenges, mental health has become a major public health concern. This initiative emphasizes the importance of preserving mental well-being in alignment with the World Health Organization’s definition of health, which includes physical, mental, and social well-being.

Overall, the Sumana Special OP plays a vital role in providing holistic, patient-centered mental healthcare, while also supporting academic training and promoting awareness on the importance of mental health in today’s society.
