Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO)

The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Thiruvananthapuram is the highest referral hospital in the field of ophthalmology in the Govt. sector in Kerala state which caters the most advanced& specialty ophthalmic care services particularly to the needy & poor sections of society right from the northern most district of Kasargod to and also from neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

The hospital was established as Government Eye Hospital in 1905, during the reign of King Sree Moolam Thirunal of Travancore. With the establishment of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1951, it became the Ophthalmology department of the Medical College. In 1995, the hospital was separated from Medical College. In the year 1995 this hospital was  upgraded to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology. The building infrastructure includes an old Block (which consists of a 250 bedded ophthalmic hospital with Theatre complex , Non Referral OP block, casualty block , administration wing, Conference Hall, Research wing etc) &a New block (which includes Referral OP block, specialty clinics, conference Halls, Classrooms, Laboratories, Theatre complex etc).

The Institute caters to a high volume of patients total of  800 to 1000 patients /day , 200 direct cases without referrals per day. We have 24 hour Casualty and Eye bank services .  In addition, speciality clinics function in the field of Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea, Pediatric ophthalmology, Strabismus, Low vision Aids etc to provide advanced care &treatment. Advanced Surgical treatment of cataract & other intraocular surgeries related to Retina, cornea, strabismus, glaucoma etc are also being performed regularly on a high volume basis Apart from there is a Visual rehabilitation centre providing rehabilitation to patients with low vision and blindness.

This institute is also well reputed for its academic courses. This includes Postgraduate courses, MBBS and paramedical courses like BSc optometry and Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistance.

Hence to fulfill the goals of maintaining high standards in providing ophthalmic care to the common man & eradicate blindness, we need to equip ourselves with the latest advanced surgical equipments. The acquisition of an Advanced model Ophthalmic surgical microscope with assistant viewing features & camera features would assist us in performing all types of intraocular surgeries, besides enabling us to train & educate our residents and fellow ophthalmologists. The second equipment for procurement ,the Advanced Phacoemulsification system would be an asset to our institution, and aid in the performance of the latest techniques of cataract surgery, considering the fact that eradication of blindness due to cataract & vision threatening diseases form the most elementary & essential part of ophthalmic care.

This will empower us to provide state of the art treatment to the common man in a government sector institution without incurring the high costs meted out for these treatment modalities in private hospitals.

Let us join our  hands together in the mission of eradication of Blindness and visual impairment in India.
