Nipah Caution Alert And Control Cell
08 July 2025Following the confirmation of two Nipah cases in the state, alerts have been issued in Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Palakkad districts. Individuals on the contact list must remain in quarantine until the date advised by health workers and avoid contact with family members and the general public. If any symptoms appear, they should inform health workers immediately.
Symptoms:
The incubation period, which is the time it takes for the virus to enter the body and cause symptoms, is 4 to 14 days. It can sometimes be up to 21 days. In addition to fever, one or more of the following symptoms may occur: headache, chills, fatigue, cough, and shortness of breath. If respiratory symptoms are present, the risk of transmission to others is higher. A key characteristic of Nipah infection is that symptoms may worsen over time, and the risk of transmission increases as the severity of the illness progresses.
Things to Note:
The Nipah virus can spread to humans directly from bats, through fruits bitten by bats, or via other animals infected by bats. Once a person shows symptoms, the virus can spread to others through close contact, especially through body fluids.
In Nipah-affected areas, anyone with symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, cough, or shortness of breath and their family members or caregivers should wear a mask. The patient's personal items should be kept separate. Anyone who had contact with the patient while they had symptoms should inform the Health Department control room and strictly follow the instructions of health workers.
Precautions:
Wear a mask when interacting with others, maintain social distancing, and wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitiser. If there are symptoms, the person and family members, and anyone who comes into contact with the patient should wear a mask.
