Malabar Cancer Centre (Post Graduate Institute of Oncology Sciences and Research) has successfully performed its first Trans Arterial Radio Embolization (TARE) procedure, marking a significant advancement in cancer treatment within the government healthcare sector in Kerala.
This achievement represents a historic first, bringing a highly advanced and targeted therapy to patients in a public sector cancer hospital in the state.

Trans Arterial Radio Embolization (TARE) is a minimally invasive procedure used mainly to treat liver cancers. In this technique, a doctor inserts a thin catheter through an artery—usually from the groin or wrist—and guides it to the blood vessels supplying the tumor. TARE is especially useful for patients who are not suitable for surgery and offers advantages such as reduced recovery time and fewer side effects compared to conventional treatments.

Key Highlights:

Indigenous Innovation: The procedure utilized ‘Bhabha Spheres’ (Yttrium-90), developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and procured through the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT).

Enhanced Affordability: The use of indigenous technology significantly reduces treatment costs, making advanced cancer care more accessible to the public.

Collaborative Expertise: The success of the procedure was made possible through a multidisciplinary effort involving the Nuclear Medicine, Anesthesia, and Radiology departments, along with expert support from GIRS Healthcare and BRIT Mumbai.

This milestone underscores the institution’s commitment to delivering evidence-based, cutting-edge oncology care, ensuring that modern treatment options are within reach for all sections of society.
