Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences (CIBS): Advancing Neuropsychiatric Research at IMHANS

The Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences (CIBS) at Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Kerala is a flagship research center established in 2022 to address fundamental and translational research questions in psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. The center is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the underlying causes of neuropsychiatric disorders and developing innovative treatments to improve the lives of individuals affected by these conditions.

Sleep Research laboratory

The Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences (CIBS) at IMHANS is equipped with a dedicated Polysomnography (PSG) laboratory designed to provide a comfortable and controlled environment for sleep assessment. This facility ensures ambient conditions that closely resemble a natural sleeping setting, helping individuals feel at ease during the procedure. By minimizing external disturbances and maintaining optimal lighting, temperature, and noise levels, the laboratory enables accurate and reliable recording of sleep patterns. The PSG lab plays a crucial role in the evaluation and diagnosis of various sleep-related disorders, supporting comprehensive clinical care and research in sleep medicine.

Diagnostic EEG and task-based event related potential (EEG/ERP) laboratory

IMHANS is equipped with a state-of-the-art electroencephalography (EEG) facility that supports both advanced clinical diagnostics and cutting-edge research. The center offers high-quality diagnostic EEG services for the evaluation of neurological conditions, ensuring accurate recording and interpretation of brain activity. In addition, it houses a sophisticated 64-channel EEG and event-related potential (ERP) recording system, which is extensively used in cognitive neuroscience and brain biology research. This advanced setup enables detailed analysis of neural processes underlying cognition, behavior, and sensory responses. By integrating clinical expertise with modern technology, the EEG facility at IMHANS plays a vital role in enhancing patient care as well as advancing interdisciplinary research in brain sciences.

Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory

The Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences (CIBS) at IMHANS is comprehensively equipped with advanced infrastructure to support molecular, cellular, and translational research. The facility includes dedicated molecular and cell biology workspaces, complemented by a well-established biobanking unit featuring -80°C and -20°C deep freezers, as well as a liquid nitrogen tank for long-term cryostorage of biological samples. CIBS hosts a state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratory equipped with a wide range of technologies, including conventional PCR, real-time PCR, digital PCR, and a capillary sequencer, enabling precise genetic and genomic analyses. The imaging facility is furnished with both brightfield and fluorescence microscopes, supporting diverse applications such as cell biology experiments and karyotyping. In addition, the center provides fully equipped laboratories for biochemical and molecular biology studies, along with robust computational resources and data storage infrastructure, facilitating integrated and high-quality research in brain sciences.
