Lions Club Kottayam Ladies Wing: Bridging the Nutritional Gap for TB Patients under Nikshay Mitra
In alignment with the national mission for a 'TB-Mukt Bharat', the Ladies Wing of Lions Club Kottayam has set a benchmark in community-led health interventions. By adopting 25 Tuberculosis patients under the Nikshay Mitra Scheme, the organization has demonstrated how local bodies can significantly enhance the effectiveness of medical treatments through holistic support.
The initiative focuses on providing high-quality nutritional food kits to patients undergoing TB treatment. Nutritional support is a critical factor in patient adherence to treatment and overall recovery outcomes, especially in reducing the social and physical burden of the disease.
Dr. Priya N., District Medical Officer (DMO), Kottayam, officially launched the program, highlighting the synergy between government health missions and community participation. In recognition of their commitment to the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, DMO presented a memento to Dr. Usha Poothiode, President of the Ladies Wing. Food kits were distributed by Dr. Vyas Sukumaran, District Programme Manager (DPM). Dr. Sreejith Babu, District TB Officer (DTO), emphasized that such schemes directly improve treatment adherence.
This model addresses the social stigma and nutritional deficiency associated with TB. By involving community leaders—including Secretary Mrs. Bindu Winny, Treasurer Mrs. Aji Biji, and Board Member Mrs. Renu Kurien—the initiative fosters a localized support system that bridges the gap between clinical care and social welfare.
