Youngest Organ Donor in the State – Alin Sherin Abraham Lives Through Five Lives
Alin Sherin Abraham, the youngest organ donor in the State, continues to live on through five individuals. The organs of the 10-month-old baby were donated by her parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, at Amrita Hospital Kochi. The donated organs included the liver, two kidneys, heart valve, and two corneas.
The liver was transplanted into a 6-month-old baby undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital Thiruvananthapuram, making the recipient the youngest patient in the State to receive a liver through deceased organ donation.
The 10-month-old child, a native of Mallappally in Pathanamthitta, suffered brain death following a road accident on February 5 at around 2:30 PM. The accident occurred while the family was traveling by car along the MC Road from Kottayam to Thiruvalla, when an oncoming vehicle collided with their car near the Pallom Borma junction. The child sustained critical injuries, and her mother and grandparents also suffered serious injuries.
Immediately after the accident, the child was admitted to hospitals in Changanassery and Thiruvalla, and later shifted to Amrita Hospital Kochi on February 7 for advanced treatment. She was declared brain dead on February 13, following which her family consented to organ donation.
The two kidneys were allocated to a child undergoing treatment in the Pediatric Nephrology Ward at the SAT Hospital Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The liver was transported to KIMS Hospital Thiruvananthapuram, the heart valve to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, and the two corneas were retained at Amrita Hospital.
The organs including the kidneys, liver, and heart valve were transported from Amrita Hospital Kochi to Thiruvananthapuram through a well-coordinated effort. The entire organ donation process was coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (K-SOTTO), with the support of the Home Department.
