The State Institute of Medical Education and Technology (SI-MET), is a prestigious project established in 2008 under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Kerala. The institute enhances and highlights the medical and paramedical education in different streams of health, viz. Modern Medicine, Allopathy, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Siddha and Unani. It also strives to strengthen the research activities in these fields.
This self-financing Institution is registered as a society under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955(Act XII of 1955) as Reg. No. T 899/08 with Thiruvananthapuram as headquarters.
The administrative control of the institution vests in a governing body with the Minister for Health & Family Welfare as chairman and the Secretary to Health as Vice Chairman. The Ex-officio members are the Secretary of Finance, Secretary-Planning, Director of State Mission NHM, Kerala, Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Health Sciences, Director of Medical Education, Director of Health Services, Director of SI-MET, Director of Ayurveda Medical Education, Principal and Controlling Officer, Government Homoeopathic Medical College and Joint Director of Nursing Education.
There are 12 Colleges of Nursing currently functioning under SIMET. In 2009, three colleges were established at Palluruthy, Malampuzha and Uduma. In 2015, the College of Nursing Muttathara, in ThiruvananthapuramDistrict, was started, which now functions at Pattor. During the year 2023, seven Colleges of Nursing were established under SIMET – Neyyattinkara, Varkala (Thiruvananthapuram Dist), Konni (Pathanamthitta Dist), Nooranad (Alappuzha Dist), Tanur (Malappuram Dist), Dharmadam, Thaliparamba (Kannur Dist). In 2025, one more College of Nursing in Chavara ( Kollam District) was established. The institute plans to host various academic and research programs in the field of Health and allied sciences under its management in the coming years.
