Antenatal Tribal Homes in Wayanad: A Milestone in Tribal Maternal Healthcare

Wayanad, one of the districts in Kerala with the highest tribal population, has long faced unique challenges in ensuring maternal healthcare access for tribal women. Many expectant mothers from remote tribal settlements were hesitant to seek maternity care at hospitals due to distance, unfamiliar surroundings, and social barriers. Recognising these challenges, the Health Department introduced an innovative and community-friendly initiative — Antenatal Tribal Homes — to improve institutional deliveries and ensure safe motherhood among tribal communities.

A dedicated antenatal care home was established to accommodate pregnant tribal women close to healthcare facilities. The initiative allowed women in the advanced stages of pregnancy to stay near hospitals along with their family members, ensuring timely access to medical care and reducing the risks associated with delayed hospital visits.

The success and positive feedback from the Noolpuzha unit soon encouraged the Health Department to expand the project to other tribal-dominant areas of the district. Today, seven Antenatal Tribal Home units are functioning across Wayanad, strategically located near major healthcare facilities. Two units operate under Sultan Bathery Taluk Hospital, two under Vythiri Taluk Hospital, and one unit each has been established at Noolpuzha, Appapara, and Vazhavatta hospitals.

These facilities were constructed at a total cost of ₹43,71,463, reflecting the State Government’s commitment to strengthening maternal health services for tribal communities. The homes provide a safe, comfortable environment where pregnant women can stay during the final weeks of pregnancy with family support while remaining under the supervision of healthcare providers.

Beyond providing accommodation, the Antenatal Tribal Homes have become centres of support and reassurance for tribal mothers. Health workers regularly visit the residents, monitor their health status, and provide counselling on nutrition, antenatal care, and newborn care. This close interaction helps build trust between tribal communities and the healthcare system.

The initiative has significantly improved hospital delivery rates among tribal women in the district and has contributed to safer pregnancies and healthier newborns. By bridging the gap between remote tribal settlements and healthcare facilities, the Antenatal Tribal Homes have emerged as a powerful example of inclusive healthcare planning.

Today, the Antenatal Tribal Home model in Wayanad stands as a successful and compassionate intervention, ensuring that every tribal mother receives the care, dignity, and support she deserves during one of the most important moments of her life. It is not just a facility, but a symbol of the Health Department’s commitment to equitable healthcare for all communities in Kerala.
