Precision Surgery Using Robotic Surgery Unit at the Regional Cancer Centre

The Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) has introduced a Robotic Surgery Unit, the first such facility to start functioning in a public sector hospital in Kerala. This advanced technology, available only in a few government hospitals in India, is helping doctors perform surgeries with greater precision.

The Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system, installed at a cost of ₹30 crore, was launched at RCC in 2024 with support from the Rebuild Kerala Initiative. With this facility, advanced precision surgery has become accessible to ordinary people, regardless of their financial background.

Robot-assisted surgery offers several benefits. It allows doctors to perform minimally invasive procedures, which means smaller cuts, less pain, reduced blood loss during surgery, and faster recovery for patients.

The effectiveness of this technology was highlighted in the case of a three-year-old boy from Nepal who was undergoing treatment for neuroblastoma of the left adrenal gland. The robotic surgery was successfully performed, and the child was able to leave the hospital just three days after the operation.

So far, more than 200 robotic surgeries have been successfully carried out at RCC. About 50 percent of these procedures were for gynecological and urological cancers.

The robotic surgery unit is helping RCC provide advanced, precise, and patient-friendly cancer treatment to more people.
