The Power of Early Intervention… Identifying DUCHANNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
RBSK Nurse of Mattathur BFHC was on her Anganwadi visit and came over a child with difficulty in walking. The Anganwadi teacher informed us that the child had difficulty for months. The nurse couldn’t find any symptoms of DDH [Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip]. She brought the child to Dr. Sushin who was a paediatrician and who was in charge of ORI camp that day. The doctor suggested a few tests and the results were indicative of MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY.
The child was referred to Government Medical College, Thrissur. A sample for the test was taken and sent to the laboratory at Hyderabad but reports were late. So, the tests were carried out at a private hospital and the report indicated DUCHANNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY. Parents weren’t aware of this condition and it was explained and treatment of the child is going on. Their second child too has similar symptoms and is sent for testing. Manjusha, RBSK Nurse’s early intervention has provided a chance for the child to get the treatment at an early stage and lead a normal life that could have been under disability.
