A Story of Timely Care, the Hridyam Success Story

“It was only because we were in Kerala that I was able to save my child,” says Shishupal, his voice filled with relief and gratitude. His words capture not just a personal moment of joy, but the life-changing impact of the state government’s Hridyam Scheme.

Shishupal, a grass-cutting machine operator from Uttar Pradesh, had moved to Kasaragod two years ago with his wife Ruchi in search of a better livelihood. Life was modest, but stable, until their young child began experiencing severe breathing difficulties.

Living near the Kottur Health and Wellness Centre, the family sought help at the Muliyar Block Family Health Centre. What began as a routine visit soon turned critical. Doctors noticed alarmingly low oxygen levels in the child’s blood. Acting swiftly, they provided immediate care and referred the child to the Government Medical College, Pariyaram, for advanced evaluation.

Further tests confirmed the parents’ worst fear: the child had a serious heart condition. But what followed was a remarkable example of a responsive and compassionate public health system in action.

On the advice of the Medical Officer at Muliyar, the hospital staff quickly coordinated with the District office of the National Health Mission. The process of enrolling the child under the Hridyam Scheme was initiated promptly. With the timely intervention and guidance of district health authorities, the procedures were fast-tracked.

Soon, the child was referred to an empanelled Hridyam hospital in Kozhikode. There, a team of specialists performed the necessary heart surgery successfully. What once seemed like an overwhelming crisis turned into a story of hope, recovery, and a second chance at life.

Behind this success story stands a network of dedicated healthcare professionals-doctors, nurses, and programme coordinators-whose timely decisions and coordinated efforts made all the difference. Their commitment did not go unnoticed. The Hridyam Scheme, designed to provide free diagnosis and treatment for children with congenital heart diseases, continues to transform lives, especially for families who might otherwise struggle to access such specialised care.

For Shishupal and his family, Kerala became more than just a place of work; it became a place of hope. And for many others, this story stands as a powerful reminder: when care, compassion, and timely action come together, miracles are possible.
