Successful Complex Pituitary Surgery at Ernakulam General Hospital Demonstrates Excellence in Treatment
In January 2026, Ernakulam General Hospital achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing the second transphenoidal pituitary surgery under Kerala Health Services. The first such procedure at the hospital was carried out in April 2018 by Dr. Saju K.G. and Dr. Dalvin Thomas.
The surgery brought hope to a 47-year-old woman from a low-income family who had been diagnosed at a private hospital with a pituitary macroadenoma extending to the third ventricle. She was informed that the surgery would cost around ₹8 lakh in the private sector—an amount far beyond her means. However, Ernakulam General Hospital stepped in to provide the highly specialised treatment free of cost.
A multidisciplinary medical team led by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Anoop and ENT Surgeon Dr. Saju K.G. performed the complex surgery. They were supported by Senior ENT Consultant Dr. Betty, anaesthetists Dr. Elizabeth Paikada and Dr. Anjana, dedicated nursing staff, and the hospital administration. Using a minimally invasive transphenoidal approach—where the tumour is accessed through the nasal passage—the team successfully removed the tumour.
During the surgery, a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak occurred, which the team expertly managed using autologous fat grafting and Hadad flap reconstruction, even without the use of expensive tissue glue. Their skill and coordination ensured the procedure was completed safely and effectively.
The patient recovered smoothly after surgery, became symptom-free, and was discharged from the hospital within a week. Subsequent endoscopic follow-up confirmed the success of the procedure.
This achievement highlights the strength of Kerala’s public healthcare system in delivering high-quality superspeciality treatment to those who need it most. It stands as a powerful example of how government hospitals, backed by skilled professionals and dedication, can provide world-class care that rivals the private sector—while remaining accessible to all.
