
₹18.87 crore for comprehensive stroke centres in medical colleges
19 December 2025Administrative sanction of ₹18.87 crore has been granted for comprehensive stroke centres in government medical colleges in the state. The stroke centres are being expanded in five medical colleges—Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Kannur. Thrombolysis treatment, which was earlier available only in private and apex hospitals, is now also being provided through 12 stroke units under the Health Department in addition to medical colleges. Steps have been initiated to upgrade six stroke centres in the state to World Stroke Organization (WSO) and NABH standards. The Health Department aims to start stroke treatment facilities in all districts of the state by this year.
The funds allocated are as follows: Thiruvananthapuram Medical College ₹1.53 crore, Kottayam Medical College ₹1.55 crore, Thrissur Medical College ₹4.78 crore, Ernakulam Medical College ₹5.49 crore, and Kannur Medical College ₹5.50 crore. The project is being implemented under the leadership of the Health Department as part of the State Annual Plan.
