Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India launched the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM) on 15th September 2014 for implementing the same through States/UT Governments to ensure easy access to quality and cost-effective AYUSH healthcare services across the country.

The NAM addresses inequities in healthcare by supporting the efforts of State and UT governments to provide AYUSH health services and education in the country, particularly in deprived and far-flung areas. Under NAM, special focus is given to backward and tribal regions. It encourages States and UTs to plan for the specific needs of these areas and allocate adequate resources in their annual plans to achieve the goal of Health and wellness news for all.

The National AYUSH Mission (NAM) in Kerala promotes five traditional systems of medicine:

  • Ayurveda – An ancient Indian system that aims to maintain balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It uses diet, herbal remedies, lifestyle changes, and therapies like massage.
  • Yoga & Naturopathy – Focuses on physical and mental wellness through yoga practices and natural healing methods like proper diet, exercise, and healthy living.
  • Unani – Based on ancient Greek principles, this system balances body humors using herbs, diet, and therapies such as massage and cupping.
  • Siddha – Originating in South India, Siddha uses herbs, minerals, and lifestyle practices to restore balance in the body’s elements.
  • Homoeopathy – Based on the idea of "like cures like," it uses diluted substances to trigger the body’s natural healing. Treatment is tailored to individual symptoms.
