RCC Thiruvananthapuram, State Cancer Institute is an autonomous institution sponsored jointly by the Government of Kerala and the Government of India. The Centre was established as per Govt. of India letter No. T. 20012/5/79-R of October 1980 as one among 6 such centres in India. Subsequently, the Centre became an ‘autonomous institution’ vide Government of India Letter No. T. 20012/5/79-R Dtd 31 January 1981. The Centre was registered under the Travancore Cochin Literary Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act 1955 vide No. 567/81 dated 02.09.1981. It has been designated as a Science and Technology Centre in the health sector by the State Government as per G. O. (Rt) No. 1521/85/11 H & FWD dated 18.11.1985. The Centre has been elevated to the status of ‘State Cancer Institute’ by the Government of India.

Regional Cancer Centre is governed by a Governing Body chaired by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala and an Executive Committee chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Kerala.

The Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram has two campuses. The first campus is  functioning in 6 acres of land and has 5 blocks. Currently all the services are provided in the first  campus through the 5 blocks covering a total of 40,303 m2. A 14 storey building of more than  30,000 m2 is nearing completion in the same campus. Once completed, the building ensures sufficient space for patient management.  

A modern patient welfare and service block was opened in the first campus in the year  2024 . The welfare block has all the facilities for patients and bystanders including a waiting  lounge, cafeteria, clock room, stationary shop, free drug bank and a community pharmacy.

The second campus is located at Pulayanarkotta, nearly 2 kilometres away from the  main campus, in a sprawling 11.8 acres of land where a plan of action for further expansion is  gaining traction. In addition to this, three outreach centres located in Kollam, Ernakulam and  Palakkad districts offer facilities such as early detection services , outreach cancer screening  programmes and followup of RCC treated cancer patients from the respective districts.
