Kannur Regional Forensic Science Lab Achieves ISO Accreditation for Advanced Forensic Services
The Regional Forensic Science Lab in Kannur has received ISO accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). This accreditation is based on the lab’s adherence to high standards in forensic analysis and service delivery.
Kannur’s lab is the second in Kerala to achieve national recognition in the field of forensic science. In 2020, the Forensic Science Lab at the Police Headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram also earned ISO accreditation. NABL accreditation is internationally esteemed, ensuring that the reports generated by these labs meet global standards.
Kerala has a network of forensic science laboratories across the state. Besides the main State Forensic Science Laboratory at the Thiruvananthapuram Police Headquarters, there are three regional labs in Kannur, Thrissur, and Ernakulam. Additionally, each of Kerala's 14 districts has its own district forensic science laboratory. Kerala is the only state in India with a forensic science lab in every district.
Kerala has 19 mobile forensic units that are equipped to inspect crime scenes across the 14 district laboratories. The Forensic Laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram is one of only 16 labs in the country recognized by the Central Government for its expertise in investigating cyber crimes. The NABL accreditation is an important achievement that will help boost Kerala's progress in the forensic field.
