The State Health Department’s Karunya Sparsham – Zero Profit Anti-Cancer Drugs scheme, which provides substantial financial relief to cancer patients and their families, has been expanded. With this, a total of 72 Karunya Sparsham counters are now functioning across the state.

Launched on August 29, 2024, the scheme ensures cancer medicines at the lowest prices in the country. In the first phase, counters were opened in 14 selected Karunya Pharmacies across all districts. Following the success of the initiative, the scheme has now been expanded to 72 centres with the addition of 58 new counters. The program is being implemented by the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL).

Karunya Sparsham counters provide high-cost cancer medicines at zero-profit rates, offering discounts of more than 90 percent. Currently, 247 branded oncology medicines are available through these centres. Medicines with a market value of ₹6.88 crore have so far been made available to patients for ₹2.26 crore, resulting in a total benefit of ₹4.62 crore.

In addition to cancer medicines, the Health Department is also exploring the possibility of including expensive drugs required for organ transplant surgeries under the zero-profit category. This will help ensure treatment for other serious illnesses at the lowest possible cost.
