Protecting health workers and patients,Code Grey Protocol in hospitals

March 31, 2025 State Health Agency Kerala (SHA) 3 Comments

To ensure the safety of health workers, patients, and hospitals in the state, the health department has implemented the Code Grey protocol. This protocol, modeled after those of developed countries, has been tailored to suit Kerala.

The finalization of the protocol occurred during a workshop led by senior police officers and senior health department officials, with input from legal experts and specialist doctors from both within and outside India, as well as ministerial-level meetings. Special funds have been allocated for its implementation, which is mandatory in all government hospitals. The protocol is designed to be applicable to all health institutions to combat violence.

The Code Grey protocol outlines preemptive actions to ensure hospital, staff, and patient safety, as well as procedures for security, reporting, and follow-up in the event of a breach. Additionally, the protocol includes instructions for providing psychological support and legal protection to employees.

Health workers and security personnel will receive specialized training to implement the protocol, and various committees will be formed at hospital and state levels to ensure safety. Furthermore, security audits of hospitals have been completed, and actions to strengthen security will be based on these audit reports. Regular mock drills will also be organized to assess security arrangements."
