Kerala Records Lowest Number of Tuberculosis Cases in India; National TB Report 2023

As per the latest National TB report released by the Union Ministry of Health, Kerala recorded the lowest number of tuberculosis cases in India. The report states that tuberculosis cases in Kerala have been confirmed at a rate of 67 per lakh people, which is significantly lower than the national average of 176.2 per lakh people. Delhi has the highest number of cases, with a rate of 546 per lakh people.

Tuberculosis was declared as a notifiable disease in India in 2012, and the latest figures show a 13% increase in the number of cases across the country compared to 2021. 95.5% of those diagnosed with the disease have received treatment. In Kerala, 23,388 cases were confirmed in 2022, with 895 children and 491 people in tribal areas diagnosed with tuberculosis. Across the country, 1,35,734 children and 2,09,111 adivasis have been diagnosed with the disease.

The 'Nalumani Pookkal' project, led by Kudumbashree in Idukki, aims to eradicate tuberculosis and has been recognized as the best model project for achieving this goal. The project aims to convey the message to every family through Kudumbashree members that tuberculosis is not incurable, but can be treated and cured.

It is noteworthy that Kerala has been ranked 5th in the country for its tuberculosis eradication activities, taking into account various factors.This ranking reflects the state's commitment and sustained efforts towards eliminating tuberculosis.
