A state-wide campaign is being organized from December 1 to 14 to eliminate complications due to diarrhea. As part of the campaign, Asha workers will visit homes with children under 5 years of age and distribute ORS packets, and identify malnourished children. Health workers, Asha and Anganwadi workers provide counseling to mothers of children under 5 years of age and training on how to prepare ORS. The campaign aims to save children's lives by eliminating complications due to diarrhea.

Diarrhea is most common in children under 5 years of age.  Diarrhea symptoms in babies should be treated immediately. Complications can be prevented if treatment is started on time. Salted Porridge Water, tender coconut water, and ORS can be used for this. In case of diarrhea, zinc should be given along with ORS as prescribed by the doctor. Zinc supplementation helps to compensate for zinc loss from the body and to restore appetite and weight gain.

ORS and Zinc corners will be ensured in health centers including private hospitals. To teach the importance of proper hand washing to children, a message will be given in the school assembly. Children will be taught the scientific method of hand washing. Posters related to this will be displayed in the hand-washing area and extensive awareness activities will be carried out as part of the campaign.

Diarrheal diseases can be prevented by maintaining personal and environmental hygiene. Only boiled water should be used for drinking. Do not mix normal water with boiled water. Wash hands thoroughly with soap before eating and after using the toilet. Vegetables used for preparing salads should be used only after washing thoroughly in clean water. Food items should be kept closed. Hotels and other establishments handling food should pay special attention to these matters. Chlorination should be done in the wells as per the instructions of the health workers.
