360-degree metabolic centers; To provide all round diabetic care under a single window system
360 degree metabolic centres will be set up in all districts to detect and control health issues such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and peripheral neuropathy. The health department is aiming at providing all-round diabetic care under a single window and prevent onset of complications. The 360 degree metabolic centre, which was started on an experimental basis at Ernakulam General Hospital, was found to be efficient and the centres were started in all districts. In addition to diabetes and blood pressure, services such as kidney efficiency, screening of diabetes affecting eyes and legs, pulmonary function test and diet counselling will be available through these centres under a single umbrella. In addition to diabetes, serious diseases caused by diabetes can also be controlled.
In the wake of the increasing incidence of lifestyle diseases, the health department is making comprehensive efforts to diagnose, control and treat the chronic disease like diabetes. The study conducted by ICMR, in association with Indian Institute of Diabetes, has pegged the diabetes prevalence at 35% and that of pre-diabetes at 15%. The study also puts the control rate of diabetes in Kerala at 16%. About 9 lakh people have been diagnosed with diabetes through the Lifestyle Disease Control Programme implementing by state government. Apart from this, as part of the 'Alppam Sredha Arogyam Urappu' campaign launched by the health department as part of controlling lifestyle diseases including diabetes, more than 42 lakh people were screened at their homes across the state. Of these, 8.6% (3,62,375) were found to be at risk of diabetes. Free diagnosis and treatment are being provided to those in need of them. Setting up of 360 degree metabolic centres in all districts will help in early detection, control and treatment of complications of diabetes.
