New paediatric ICU wing in SAT Hospital; An initiative in the health care infrastructure for children
A new paediatric ICU wing has been set up at the SAT Hospital, medical college, Thiruvananthapuram for the intensive care of children. The unit consists of 32 ICU beds, ten ventilators, six non-invasive bypass ventilators, two portable ultrasound machines, three defibrillators, 12 monitors, and allied equipment. The new ICU will be specialized in intensive respiratory care. At present, the hospital is having an 18-bed ICU facility in the pediatric department. With the addition of 32 more beds and state-of-the-art equipment, the ICU will cater to all the emergency needs of the children. Apart from this, 54 ICU beds are available in the newborn wing of the hospital. The SAT hospital is one of the biggest women and child care hospitals in south India. It is estimated that over 10,000 babies are born every year at this hospital. This hospital is not only catering to patients from the state but also from neighboring states. The government had spent Rs 96 lakh for setting up this new venture. As part of the master plan prepared for the development of the medical college hospital at a cost of Rs 717.29 crore, a new block will be constructed at SAT Hospital.
