Mammogram facilities expanded to district and taluk hospitals for early cancer detection
Mammogram facilities for breast cancer detection in the state have been extended to district and taluk-level hospitals. In the first phase, mammograms will be installed in eight hospitals through the Kerala Medical Services Corporation, including Alappuzha General Hospital, Kasargod General Hospital, Kozhikode General Hospital, Pathanamthitta General Hospital, Pala General Hospital, Tirur District Hospital, Adimali Taluk Hospital, and Nalloornad Tribal Hospital.
As part of the Aardram lifestyle disease screening initiative, people over 30 years of age are being screened at home by health workers to ensure early detection and treatment of cancer. The most common cancer detected in this test is breast cancer. Out of a total of more than 1.53 crore people who were screened, more than 7.9 lakh people were found to be at risk of breast cancer. After undergoing expert examination, treatment is ensured for those diagnosed with the disease. In this context, a mammogram system is being set up in more district and taluk hospitals with special emphasis on breast cancer prevention and treatment.
If breast cancer can be detected and treated at an early stage through mammogram breast X-ray examinations, complications can be prevented, and the death rate can be greatly reduced. In addition to the existing systems at cancer centers and major medical colleges, early cancer screening has been started in all hospitals and public health centers to ensure early detection and treatment of cancer. Training is also provided to women in self-diagnosis of breast cancer.
Comprehensive schemes are being devised and implemented in the state to detect cancer at an early stage and ensure effective treatment. Comprehensive cancer care, lifestyle screening, robotic surgery facilities, cancer grid, cancer care suite, and cancer registry systems exist for cancer treatment in Kerala. Apart from this, special camps have been conducted to detect cancer, and facilities for cancer treatment have been provided in 25 hospitals in addition to the main hospitals. All hospitals will start cancer screening clinics at least one day a week.
