The Health Department has introduced an HPV vaccination program for Plus One and Plus Two girl students in the state to prevent cervical cancer in women. The project will initially be implemented on a pilot basis in Kannur district. Aiming for a cervical cancer–free Kerala, the initiative has been developed under the supervision of health experts and a technical committee.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide and the second most common in India. It continues to be a major cause of cancer-related deaths. About 350,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2022. Ensuring that all girls receive the HPV vaccine can protect future generations from this preventable disease.

This pilot initiative aims to educate the public on the health benefits of the HPV vaccine and motivate voluntary participation in vaccination. The programme will be carried out with the active involvement of community organisations and the public, with support from groups such as the Lions Club, Rotary Club, and other voluntary associations.

This HPV vaccination program implemented for Plus One and Plus Two girl students is a crucial step toward the goal of a cervical cancer–free Kerala. Through public awareness initiatives and the support of voluntary organizations and health experts, the project aims to protect the younger generation from cervical cancer and ensure a healthier future.
