Kerala Becomes First State to Administer Emicizumab Prophylaxis to a Woman With Haemophilia
Kerala's healthcare sector has reached a new milestone, becoming the first in India to successfully provide emicizumab prophylaxis treatment to a woman with haemophilia.
A 32-year-old woman from Thrissur, who suffers from a severe form of hemophilia with a Factor VIII level below one percent, was provided with this advanced treatment free of cost. The procedure was carried out at Thrissur Medical College under the expert guidance of a specialised medical team as part of the government's Ashadhara scheme.
Given the rarity of haemophilia in women, this successful intervention marks a major breakthrough in medical science. The state of Kerala had already established guidelines for treating bleeding disorders in women in 2025.
This achievement builds on Kerala's ongoing efforts to improve haemophilia care. The state already provides free emicizumab treatment to over 500 patients and was the first in the country to offer the medicine at no cost to all haemophilia patients under the age of 18. These proactive healthcare measures are instrumental in reducing bleeding episodes, minimising hospital visits, and ultimately enhancing the quality of life for patients.
