State of art facilities for cancer treatment in Cancer Centers in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) and Thalassery Malabar Cancer Centre (MCC) have come up with state-of-the-art cancer treatment facilities in the government sector. The treatment and neurosurgical oncology system for retinoblastoma, which is most commonly seen in the eye of children under the age of 5 years, has been started at MCC for the first time in the state. This cancer, which can lead to complete loss of vision in the eye, can be completely restored to vision and life if detected early and treated. The MCC has been equipped with facilities to provide comprehensive treatment free of cost through various government schemes. The treatment modalities include treatment given directly to the eye, such as laser treatment and cryotherapy, as well as chemotherapy and radiation when necessary. Chemotherapies to treat retinoblastoma include systemic chemotherapy, intra-arterial chemotherapy, intravitreal chemotherapy, and subtinone chemotherapy.
MCC is equipped with advanced facilities related to neurosurgical oncology, a surgical system that removes cancer and other tumors in the brain and spinal cord. MCC also provides facilities such as marrow transplantation treatment for children, limb salvage surgery, brain tumor surgery, and therapeutic rehabilitation. Lutetium, the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, was set up in the Department of Nuclear Medicine at RCC for the first time in the government sector. The associated gallium generator will soon be commissioned in the RCC.
