Breast milk bank at Kozhikode Medical College provided milk to over 4,000 infants
The breast milk bank established at the Kozhikode Medical College's mother and child center has provided breast milk to 4393 children so far. The Breast Milk Bank was initiated with the objective of offering the most nutritious milk to newborn babies, thereby reducing infant mortality.
Breast milk plays a vital role in the healthcare of babies. It is essential to breastfeed a newborn baby within the first hour of birth and exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months. The breast milk bank was established to ensure a steady supply of breast milk to children who are deprived of breastmilk due to the mother's illness, lack of breast milk production, or the unfortunate event of the mother's death after delivery. On September 17, 2021, the first breast milk bank in government colleges began functioning at the Mother and Child Care Center of Kozhikode Medical College.
A total of 3,17,925 ml of milk was collected from 3484 donors, and 2,94,370 ml of milk was distributed to 4393 babies, as prescribed by doctors. Breast milk is collected using a breast milk pump in a specially sterilized room after conducting necessary tests and assessing the health status of those who come to donate breast milk. The collected breast milk undergoes pasteurization to ensure its sterility through microbiological testing. This pasteurized donor human milk is provided free of cost to eligible newborns based on the doctor's prescription.
The operation is led by the hospital superintendent, the heads of the pediatrics department and the neonatology department, along with the nodal officer. Currently, the Nursing Officer Incharge, Coordinator, Nursing Officers, and JPHN are actively involved in carrying out the work.
