A new linear accelerator machine has been commissioned at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College as part of making the preventive and treatment activities being carried out by Kerala for cancer treatment and control more vigorous and scientific. The rs 18.5-crore high energy linear accelerator machine has been set up to provide modern cancer treatment. The  linear accelerator is very helpful in the treatment of cancer.  The uniqueness of this device is that it can accurately use x-ray and electron beam with different frequencies required to treat different types of cancers. 
The unit also has the facility to protect nearby healthy body tissues and other vital organs from radiation while destroying cancer cells. The advantage of this is that the treatment with utmost precision can be carried out very quickly to minimize the side effects as much as possible. With the commissioning of this machine for high-quality radiation treatment, the waiting time  of patients for treatment can be significantly reduced .The computer treatment planning system has also been activated in connection with this. The medical college has been equipped with a treatment facility that costs more than Rs 2 lakh in private hospitals. Modern cancer treatment techniques such as 3D conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, and volumetric arc therapy are also possible.
 This machine can only transmit radiation on cancer cells with utmost precision. It can also provide radiation therapy without harming other organs that are normal. A telecobalt machine worth Rs 3.8 crores has also been activated for cancer treatment.  The new system was implemented as part of the move to provide state-of-the-art cancer treatment in the medical college as well.
