Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani and Siddha streams of medicines are known as Indian Systems of Medicine. Primary, secondary and tertiary health care delivery through these systems of medicine is carried out by different institutions under department of ISM. The department undertakes medical aid to the people through a wide network of hospitals and dispensaries belonging to Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Siddha and Unani systems throughout Kerala. Service delivery is rendered by means of In-patient and Out-patient treatments through 1093 dispensaries, 130 hospitals and 64 sub centers all over the state. It is with immense pride and privilege that the Department of ISM is giving yeoman service to the health care needs in the preventive, promotive and curative aspects of the population of more than 3 crores across the length and breadth of the state.
Our area of health care delivery includes Detection Prevention, and Management of communicable and non communicable diseases, school health programmes, programmes for differently abled children, Palliative care, women and child health care programmes, Sports Ayurveda, health care programmes in association with various departments viz. Social Justice department, Local Self Government department, Scheduled Tribes department, Fisheries department, State Sports Councils etc.
The department of Indian systems of medicine comes under the department of AYUSH Kerala, headed by the AYUSH Secretary, and is controlled and administered by the Director supported by 2 Joint Directors, Administrative Officer, Accounts Officer and Administrative Assistant at the Directorate and District Medical Officers at district level. Field administration is effected by 14 District Medical Officers. All the Ayurveda, Yoga & Nature cure, Unani and Siddha hospitals and dispensaries are functioning under the District Medical Officers concerned. Govt. Ayurveda Research Institute for Mental Health and Hygiene, Kottakkal, Malappuram, Kerala Institute of Sports Ayurveda and Research, Thrissur, and Varkala NCH comes under the direct control of the Director. The various hospitals and dispensaries are administered by concerned charge Medical Officers. Total employees of this department is 5573, they renders exemplary service by catering to the health care needs of people from all walks of life.
